aka How I stopped crying over Excel and started ruling my finances like a queen
Let’s set the scene:
Once upon a time, in a land not-so-far-away (okay, it was Massachusetts), I was running a business and doing the absolute most to avoid my finances. I’m talking receipts crammed in drawers, numbers that never quite added up, and spreadsheets that looked like they’d been cursed by a bored wizard with a grudge.
The word “reconciliation” made me sweat. “Chart of accounts” sounded like a pirate map. And don’t get me started on trying to understand the difference between income and cash flow—wasn’t it all just money in the account?
Spoiler alert: It was not.
My Breaking Point
It all came to a head the day I couldn’t pay myself. I stared at my bank account and muttered the immortal words:
“But where did all the money go?”
That’s when I realized: being good at what you do isn’t the same as being good at managing your business. I was making sales, booking clients, hustling hard—but financially, I was flying blindfolded into a fog bank.
The Turning Point
So I did what any future Countess of Accounting would do—I poured a glass of wine and decided to face the numbers. One YouTube video became a course. One course became a spreadsheet. That spreadsheet turned into QuickBooks. And somewhere between my first bank feed and my first clean reconciliation report, I found something I didn’t expect:
I kind of liked it.
No, not in a “let’s do math for fun!” way. But in a “wait—I’m in control now” way. I started understanding how every financial decision affected the next. I could plan. I could grow. I could breathe.
The Crown Moment (with Credentials, Darling)
That little spark turned into a full-blown glow-up. I got serious about my education—earning multiple Intuit certifications, completing an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, and enrolling in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I’m currently pursuing my degree in Accounting.
So yes, the Countess has the crown and the credentials.
I went from dreading the numbers to teaching other small business owners how to read them. I built systems. I created workflows. And somewhere along the way, I found my calling: helping entrepreneurs rule their finances without fear or confusion.
And thus, the Countess of Accounting was born.
The Royal Lesson?
You don’t have to love bookkeeping. You just have to stop ignoring it.
Because once you understand what your numbers are telling you, your business becomes a whole lot less scary—and a whole lot more powerful.
- Your books don’t have to be a mystery.
- You can learn the ropes.
- And if I can go from spreadsheet-scared to spreadsheet-sassy, so can you.
